BROWN BABY

A set of fraternal twins who were born to an African American GI father and German mother in cold war Germany. The male twin, Doran is adopted out of Germany by a black American military family while the female twin, Sharon remains in Germany. We see how drastic these twins’ lives are affected by the adoption and cultural process of their ancestry. We see the life challenges these twins face growing up in their younger years not knowing about each other and their yearning for answers and the difficulties they face as post-war children.

Decades later, Doran begins the search for his twin sister and returns to Germany. By a meeting of chance, he meets a historian who was researching these so-called “Besätzungskinder” — children of the occupation. Dorian began to learn about the lives of these children. This group gave him the support outlet he needed being in a land unfamiliar to him. The twins eventually become reunited in the search for their mother and they learn how the effects of World War 2 affected their family history in a grave and enduring way.
